Trademark Registration

In Turkey, the registration authority for the trademarks is TURKISH PATENT INSTITUTE established in Ankara.

Although Turkish citizens could apply directly before TPI, the foreigners should appoint a representative / trademark attonrey / trademark bureau to file application, receive the further correspondences and obtain the registration certificate.

Due to the Law No.556  related with the Protection of the Trademarks; once a trademark is applied , it is forwarded to examination for 3-5 months time.

If there is not any grounds of  refusal , the application is published on the monthly  Trademarks Bulletin for 3 months.

The 3 months publication period is also opposition term for 3rd parties .

If there is not any opposition at the end of the publication period , the registration decision is issued and the registartion certificate has been prepared.

The time to obtain registration is nearly about 12 months from the application date.

The protection period is 10 years from the application date and can be renewed for  every 10 years.

Multi class applications are allowed in Turkey .

If the trademark specimen is changed or the applicant would like to wide the list of the goods/services , there should  a new application be filed.
